Everyone who drives or owns a car must have car insurance. Car insurance provides protection in case of an accident. Car insurance is mandatory in most states to help protect people from lawsuits. There are two main types of car insurance. These two types include liability and comprehensive. Together these types of insurance will cover you, your vehicle and the property and vehicles and others in the event of an accident.
Liability car insurance is important because it covers injuries to others that occur as a result of your responsibility of an accident. Without liability car insurance a simple accident could result in a lawsuit against you that could leave you bankrupt. Liability car insurance covers such things as medical claims from others who were injured as a result of your accident. Liability car insurance can also cover property damage to other vehicles or property as a result of your accident.
Comprehensive car insurance covers your vehicle against damage from accidents as well as from other sources such as damage due to flood or fire, damage caused by animals and covers your vehicle if it is stolen. Comprehensive car insurance is available in varying amounts of coverage as well as a specific deductible. The deductible amount is the amount that you will pay out of pocket if one of these situations occurs. The insurance company will pay the remainder of the expenses to fix your vehicle.
Collision car insurance is coverage that protects your car against damages. If your car is damaged due to an accident the collision portion of your car insurance pays for repairs. There is a deductible associated with collision car insurance, which you will pay in order to fix your vehicle should damage occur. If you lease your vehicle or have an auto loan on your vehicle the bank will require you to keep a certain amount of car insurance in order to protect the asset.
Many states also require that drivers carry some amount of uninsured motorist car insurance. Uninsured or underinsured motorist insurance provides coverage to you, your passengers and vehicle in the event of an accident caused by another driver who does not have car insurance. All forms of car insurance are designed to protect you from incurring the expenses that may happen as the result of being involved in a motor vehicle accident.
